Duties

As a Medicolegal Death Investigator you will:
  • Handle phone calls reporting deaths, responding to death scenes, conducting investigations which include researching and gathering information, interviewing witnesses, real time database direct entry, preparing investigative reports, handling evidence, moving remains, and determining jurisdiction of deaths reported to the OME.
  • Assist medical examiners/forensic pathologists with complete documentation of evidence collected and recorded chain of custody, reports, and records gathering and review, and other requests as needed.
  • Be familiar with laws and regulations regarding death investigation in Utah.
  • Respond to incoming questions and complaints, provide information as allowed by law, explain policies and procedures, and facilitate resolution of issues as they arise.
  • Facilitate information exchange between investigators and organ and tissue donation coordinators to allow for timely donation of organs and tissues.
  • Coordinate information exchanges with law enforcement entities, treating physicians, attorneys and families.
  • Other duties, tasks and responsibilities may be assigned at any time.

  • Conducts investigations into allegations of a variety of inappropriate activities, rules infractions, illegal actions, or cause of death.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
  • Receives, researches, and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution.
  • Maintains detailed inspection or investigation records, prepares reports, and attends to other related administrative requirements.
  • Coordinates program activities, services, and/or program implementation with private providers, other governmental entities, program users, etc.
  • Acts as an expert witness. Gives testimony and /or recommendations in court cases and/or hearings.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be located in Salt Lake County
  • Has experience as a medicolegal death investigator.
  • Has scene investigative experience (CSI, detective, law enforcement officer, etc.)
  • Has a certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI).
  • Has strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Has a medical degree or training (PA, NP, RN, paramedic, EMT, etc.) and current certification.
  • Has a Bachelor's or Master's degree in forensic science, medical/nursing, or science.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check
  • Bachelor's degree in forensic science, nursing, a biological science, criminal justice or a related field AND one (1) year of directly related, experience in medical or criminal or death investigation;
  • OR,
  • Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the above stated requirements.

  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
  • Knowledge of applications and programming.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:
  • The OME operates 24 hours per day / 7 days per week. This position will be staffed for two 12 hour shifts a week that include days, nights, weekends and holidays to maintain 24-hour coverage.
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g. working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • The working conditions vary based on the time of year, weather, and location of the investigation scene. This position requires the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment.
  • Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
Physical Requirements:
  • Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, hiking, walking over rough terrain or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) or similar activities.
