Job Description

Bay Area Women's Center seeks a Crisis Intervention Specialist to join our team. This position supports the agency’s crisis hotline and domestic violence emergency shelter program.

The Crisis Intervention Specialist is essential to our mission , offering immediate support and assistance to survivors while ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for emergency shelter residents. Responsibilities include responding to crisis hotline calls, connecting clients with on-call staff or case managers for further counseling, and ensuring the confidentiality, safety, and security of residential clients. Duties also extend to providing essential services, such as assisting with preparing meals and maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the shelter through housekeeping tasks. The goal of a Crisis Intervention Specialist is to offer a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment while facilitating access to necessary resources and services.

The ideal candidate possesses a compassionate and nonjudgmental disposition, the ability to work autonomously, and strong self-leadership skills. This includes remaining calm under pressure and being proactive in problem-solving and decision-making. Experience in a residential setting and knowledge of the issues surrounding domestic violence is helpful but not required. On-the-job training will be provided.

The Crisis Intervention Specialist position primarily works the third-shift hours, rotates weekend coverage, and works with the team to cover open shifts and holidays when necessary.

Specific Duties:

  • Answer and adequately respond to crisis hotline calls.
  • Connect hotline callers and walk-in survivors with on-call staff.
  • Connect survivors with agency therapists and case managers for ongoing counseling and support.
  • Conduct emergency shelter intakes and exits.
  • Provide support, information, and referrals to residents and hotline callers.
  • Conduct nightly facility security checks.
  • Assist with emergency shelter meal preparation and storage tasks.
  • Assist with emergency shelter housekeeping tasks.
  • Attend training to enhance knowledge and professionalism.
  • Ensure confidentiality and accuracy of client records.
  • Track hotline calls and provide data entry support for service tracking and reporting

Requirements

  • Preferred: Knowledge and experience with the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault, crisis intervention skills, and some experience in a residential setting.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to remain calm and manage emergency situations.
  • Possess a nonjudgmental and compassionate disposition.
  • Able to complete basic cleaning and cooking tasks.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Able and willing to work weekends and some holidays.
  • Able to climb stairs
  • Able to safely operate office machines and shelter appliances/equipment.
  • Successful candidates are subject to Central Registry Clearance and criminal background screening.

This is a non-exempt, full-time, 32 hours per week position starting with a base pay of $14.50 - $15.50 per hour . The $5 per hour shift premium is added when working 10pm to 6am.
